Surfing Nearby

The surf near Casa Ensueño offers a wide variety of choices for all levels of experience.  What sets Nicaragua apart from most other locations is that the consistent offshore winds and changing tides allow you to sample multiple spots throughout the day without the worry of onshore winds killing your session.  And what sets the house apart from most other rentals nearby is that you can check the surf easily from the terrace without getting into a car.

Just out front is Rosada, a world-class, powerful left point with rides over 100 yards long.  This is not a beginner's wave!  It's very fast, holds any size and breaks best at lower tide.  The house has been designed so that you can check this spot from the master bedroom without raising your head from the pillow.

Just around the point, a 10 minute walk away, is Santana... a hollow river mouth beach break with rights and lefts.  It offers 2 main peaks and works best at higher tide.  The Rancho Santana poolside bar overlooks this break.

You can drive up the coast about 20 minutes and surf Popoyo, one of the best reef breaks in Nicaragua.  It holds any size and breaks at all tides with both rights and lefts.  There's also Outer Reef Popoyo known as one of the most challenging waves in Nicaragua.  On big days, you may see surfers towing-in to the monster caverns.

You can also drive 10 minutes down our private back trails, park at Los Perros beach and walk 5 minutes to Panga Drops, a beach point with easy rights and lefts.  Further down, about another 10 minute walk is the Colorado Pipeline, a river mouth beach break that seems to magnify any swell delivering wedges and barrels.  These breaks are located on another private development and are only accessible by boat unless you are a Rancho Santana guest with access to walk in on the beach.

Another option is to hire a panga.  It's a great way to explore hard to reach spots and to do some fishing.  You'll have access to Manzanillo, another left point and Playgrounds, a trestles-like cobblestone beach point.    Once you confirm reservations, we can provide more details on surf spots, tides, swell direction and pangas.  Also, check out our surfboard rentals here.  To see more surf shots, go to the photos page and click on surf.
